How Benzocaine Works
A cold sore virus causes inflammation and tissue damage. In response, your body triggers pain receptors (figure 1). Benzocaine temporarily blocks the pain receptors, reducing the pain (figure 2).
How Allantoin Works
As a cold sore heals – it forms a stiff scab (figure 3). This scab can crack and bleed causing pain and sensitivity to sour foods (figure 4). Allantoin softens the scab – making it flexible and resistant to cracking (represented by the difference between figures 5 and 6).
