I have worked in the fashion and make-up industry for years. I’ve worked on a lot of faces – some with cold sores. Unfortunately, by the time those faces get to me – the show must go on! As much as we’d like to cancel our big event until we are unblemished – it is not an option.

I remember working at a high fashion event show and one of the models that I had to style had unexpectedly gotten a cold sore overnight. She was frantic about it. Could I cover the cold sore? Would she get fired from the show? Did I have any tricks up my designer sleeves? I reassured her that this was a “beauty” bump in the road and we would get through it together.

Unless you are a celebrity, model or in the industry – you are probably not used to flashing bulbs and hitting your best pose for every photo-op. This isn’t to say you shouldn’t be ready when the occasion arises. And yes, it is possible to be photo-ready even if you are suffering a cold sore outbreak!

If you are having a bad cold sore day – just add a touch of choreography into your shot. For fun – I call this one “Stop in the name of love”. Just like Ms. Diana Ross, you need to strike your best diva pose and reach your hand forward like you’re commanding someone to stop. Then ever so slightly bring it back to your lips and cover your cold sore. Work it girl and you’ll work that cold sore right out of your shot.

My friends have nicknamed me Dr. Self-Esteem. While I too struggle with my own internal battles with my body and self-image – I also realize that I’m my own worst critic. That is why I make it my daily goal to be positive and think positive.

Think about it. Words like viral and contagious – are usually connected with disease and infection. Like our nasty friend the cold sore. But you know what else is contagious? Good vibes! Positive attitudes! Smiles!

Examples of people who pass on good vibes daily? Richard Simmons and Mr. Rogers. Okay – I realize most people aren’t that energetic or nice ALL the time, but you get my point.
